WHEN BMW launched the first- generation S1000RR in 2010 it was a game-changer.
Until it arrived, the Japanese and Italian manufacturers were having it away.
It delivered more power, more technology and less weight than any litre sports bike ever had. It even came with heated grips and cruise control.
The S1000RR might not have had much success on the race track, but out there in the real world it kicked ass.
For 2019, the S1000RR is all new – and it is not just a couple of updated stickers and a few extra horsepower.
It’s underneath the bodywork, though, where the magic really happens. The amount of rider software this bike has is insane.
Everything you could possibly want to adjust in order to improve your performance on road or track can now be tweaked through an easy-to-use system, with all of your choices displayed through a sweet TFT screen.
Our ride was at Estoril race circuit in Portugal. It was also soaking wet. Not that this worried the bike – a few taps on the system had it set up for rain- riding and we were away.
When we say away, we mean doing an easy 175mph down the start-finish straight and carving through the corners as if it were a sunny summer day.
BMW has shaved 15 kilos from the weight of the previous model. It has also pushed power at the wheel to 204bhp.
The drive is as smooth as silk, from zero revs all the way to the redline – and when you’re ready for another gear, the clutchless quick-shifter will gladly feed you another gear while you reel in the horizon.
Cornering ABS, active suspension, wheelie control and a host of other useable systems all come together to make you feel completely safe while you scare yourself silly.
The 2019 S1000RR really is an amazing bike to ride. BMW has done it again, pushing the boundaries of performance to new levels. You can ride this bike from as little as £186 per month and, yes, it still has heated grips and cruise control.
